TOWSON, Md. - Continuing a tradition of strong academic performance by the Anderson University softball program, former Trojan standout Emily Monteith has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Softball First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday.
Monteith, from Clover, S.C., is one of one of 11 players
selected to the national team (college division) and also earned
academic all-conference honors earlier this year.
A Kinesiology major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Monteith batted
.324 with eight home runs, 38 runs scored and 25 runs batted in for
Anderson. She led the Trojans to a 22-21 South Atlantic Conference
record, playing in all 43 games and ranked sixth in the league in
runs scored. She was second on the squad with 44 hits on the
season.
The 5-6 senior was third on the team in home runs, and fourth in slugging percentage (.559) and on-base percentage (.387). Monteith led the team in stolen bases, going 6-for-7 on the season. She opened the season with a seven-game hitting streak and also posted a six-game and a pair of four-game hitting streaks.
Monteith earned second-team All-South Atlantic Conference recognition at the conclusion of the season and was named SAC Player of the Week once. The infielder was named second team All-Conference Carolinas as a junior during the Trojans' final season in the league. She was also named as Conference Player of the Week as a junior.
"I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of Emily," said Anderson head softball coach Tommy Hewitt. "With the hectic practice schedules, grueling season travel and games, to earn first-team Academic All American is absolutely amazing."
One of only two South Carolina natives and representing one of just two schools from the state of South Carolina in either the University or College divisions, Monteith became eligible after being named to the first-team all-district squad earlier this month.
Former AU standout shortstop Meredith Knox also earned the same honor following the 2010 season.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a
student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain
a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached
sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current
institution and be nominated by his/her sports information
director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic
All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in
Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship
sports.
