Trojan Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Anderson softball team closed out its two-day, four-game road swing by posting its second doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating Meredith College, 4-1 and 12-5, Sunday afternoon at the Meredith Softball Complex.

The first game was a pitcher's duel until the Trojans broke through for four runs in the final inning, but the flood gates opened in the second game when the visiting team posted 12 runs off 17 hits to claim the win. Anderson (5-2) has won five of its' last six, while the Avenging Angels fell to 1-3 on the year.

Game #1
Anderson 4, Meredith 1

The Trojans entered their final at-bat trailing 1-0, but sophomore Kayla Hipp ignited the rally by reaching on an infield single and following a Danielle Swygert single, senior Emily Monteith singled to center, tying the game at one apiece. With Abby Child at the plate, another Meredith error allowed Anderson to take a 2-1 lead and during the next at-bat a wild pitch allowed Monteith to score an insurance run and make the score 3-1.

With a last chance for Meredith to steal the game from the visitors, AU pitcher Madison Carpenter closed out the game for the Trojans as her infield turned a double play to secure the win.

Monteith went two-for-three and notched an RBI for one of the Trojans all- important runs.

Casey Deer started the game for Anderson, giving up no earned runs and just one hit. Carpenter appeared in her first game for the Trojans this season and closed out the game for Anderson, giving up zero runs and just one hit over the final three innings.


Game #2
Anderson 12, Meredith 5

The Trojans' bats came to life in the second game, as AU came through with 17 hits. A passed ball by the Meredith catcher in the first inning allowed the Trojans to get on the board 1-0. The next batter, Charlotte Seiber hit an infield single to bring home Abby Child, who had reached on an error, giving Anderson a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Errors plagued the Trojans in the bottom part of the first inning. The first miscue came from the AU infield and allowed MC's Emily Cooke to score, and make the score 2-1 in favor of the Trojans. Freshman Ashley Green was the next batter for Meredith, and she hit an RBI single that knotted the game at two.

In the second inning Meredith would commit two more errors, enabling to retake the lead. Brooke Lucas, the second AU batter in the inning, reached on an infield error by Meredith. The miscue would cost the Avenging Angels as the next batter, Danielle Swygert, homered to right field. The two-run blast gave the Trojans a 4-2 lead.

AU scored a solo run in the fourth and with the 5-2 lead, the Trojans went into the fifth inning looking to put the game away. After a Lyndsey Huitt walk, Brooke Lucas singled to left field. Continuing her success, Swygert would double to bring home Huitt. The next batter, Monteith would ground out, not before bringing home Lucas. The senior would give the Trojans the 7-2 advantage. After an Abby Child RBI-single, the Trojans left the inning with an 8-2 lead.

Meredith would use three hits and a Trojan error to tack on three more runs over the next two innings; but the Trojans would put the game away in the final inning, scoring four runs. In the final inning, with a runner on second base, Hipp put the Trojans on the board with an RBI double. One batter later with runners at the corners, Monteith singled to right field to bring home Hipp, making the score 10-5. One batter later Laura Jansky delivered the big blow with a two-RBI double.

Swygert went five-for-five with three RBI and her perfect mark help pace the Trojans in their victory. Jansky also drove in three runs with a big three-for-five day.

Freshman Kelsey Davis started the game for Anderson, tossing four innings and gave up four runs - none earned. Casey Deer gave up just one run as she closed out the final three innings for the Trojans.

The Trojans return home on Wednesday when they face Lander in a doubleheader. The first game at Smethers Field is set to start at 2 pm.
