Track and Field Set to Open Outdoor Season at Charlotte 49er Classic

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson men's and women's track and field teams are slated to open their respective outdoor seasons by competing at the 49er Classic, which will be hosted by Charlotte on the Irwin Belk Track.

The 49er Classic will feature more than 50 teams and admission is free.

Anderson wrapped up its indoor season nearly four weeks ago with some stellar performances at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. On the women's side, senior D'Yandra Morris captured fifth place in the women's shot put, with freshman JoLyn Copeland taking 20th. Morris also finished 14th in the weight throw, while Copeland was 21st.

Freshman Martha Coleman was eighth in the 5000 meter run, with sophomore Hannah Sanford taking ninth in the event. Fellow freshman Tori Cooper finished 18th in the women's 400 meter run, with freshman Madison Seay garnering 27th. Freshman Bailey Waldbart was 12th in the women's pole vault, while junior Olivia Gardner captured 17th in the mile run with a time of 5:15.71. The tandem of Sherin Malone, Cooper, Ali Palacios and Madison Seay captured fourth place in the women's 4x400 meter relay.

Sophomore Anthony Aleruchi garnered 14th in the weight throw and claimed 17th in the men's shot put, with junior Eric Hoover taking 27th in the long jump and 15th in the triple jump. Freshman Luke Rochester finished eighth in the pole vault, with classmate Jeff Bannon just behind in ninth. Junior Ben Boerma captured fourth place in the 5000 meter run and sophomore Caleb Stephenson took seventh place in the 400 meter run. Fellow sophomore Rashod Monts was 12th in a time of 51.03. Stephenson also claimed ninth in the 200 meter dash and freshman Brandon Kauer was 13th.

Sophomore Mason Hazel finished 13th in the men's mile run, while sophomore Brelyn Barclay was seventh in the men's high jump.

At the conclusion of the indoor season, nine Trojans earned All-Region accolades in 13 events from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Gardner earned the accolades for the mile run, 3000 meters and 5000 meters, Malone (60 meter hurdles), Morris (shot put and weight throw) and Waldbart (pole vault). Anderson's honorees on the men's side were Bannon (pole vault), Christopher Burton (60 meters), Mason Hazel (mile run and 5000 meters), Rochester (pole vault) and Stephenson (400 meters).

The Trojans last competed at the 49er Classic during the 2014 campaign, with Hoover earning 41st in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 36.17 meters and Boerma posting a then school record in the men's 5000 meter run. Malone posted a school record in the women's 100 meter hurdles, while Lauren Averitt finished 63rd in the 100 meter prelims.

The 1500 meter finals saw Bari Robinson finish in 59th place and a trio of then-freshmen paced the Trojans in the 5000 meter finals, as Gardner captutred 31st, with Gerlock crossing the line in 56th.

Friday's events are slated to get underway at 9 a.m. with the decathlon, while the women's hammer throw leads off the field events at 10 a.m.
