Women’s Track and Field Finishes Second at Southeast Regional Championships

HICKORY, N.C. - Buoyed by 17 season-best performances, the Anderson University women's track and field team captured second place at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships, which concluded Saturday at the Moretz Sports Complex/Irwin Belk Track.

Sophomore Brooklyn Watt captured a pair of first-place finishes, while also finishing second in the hammer throw. The Walhalla, S.C., native won the discus throw with a distance of 38.36 meters and also claimed first place in the shot put with a toss of 12.19 meters. She placed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 39.49 meters.

Fellow sophomore Jill Baxter notched four top-seven finishes, earning second in the high jump with a season-best height of 1.57 meters, while placing third in the long jump with a distance of season-best 4.86 meters. She finished seventh in the 400 meter with a season-best time of 1:03.11 and posted fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 28.19 meters.

Freshman D'Yandra Morris recorded her season best in the hammer throw (36.51 meters) with a fourth-place finish, while also finishing fourth in the shot put with a distance of 11.03 meters. She placed sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 26.95 meters. Sophomore Brooklyn Watkins also posted a pair of season-best performances, placing second in the javelin throw (32.63 meters) and eighth in the discus throw (23.58 meters)

Sophomore Savanna Keese earned third in the discus throw and fifth in the shot put, with season-best distances of 31.26 meters and 11.00 meters, respectively. Sophomore Madison Guest finished second in the 800 meter run (2:25.38), while earning fourth in the 400 meter with a season-best time of 1:01.09.

Sophomore Sydney Hazel finished third in the 1500 meter (5:00.36) and fourth in the 800 meter (2:27.26), while Re'Jeania Evans claimed fourth in the 100 meter dash with a season-best time of 12.86. 6 Westberry, Rachel Westberry took sixth in the 1500 meter with a season-best time of 5:14.30 and Devan Fisher finished the 1500 meter with a season-best time of 5:43.99. Senior Joelle Purinton placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a season-best mark of 17.67 and senior Amanda Mahaffey closed out her career in the black and gold with a season-best time of 20:22.69 and a sixth-place finish in the 5000 meter run.

Baxter will compete at the Lynchburg College Heptathlon on May 6-7.
