Defensive Dominance Propels Trojans To Lopsided Victory Over Wolves; 69-35

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University women's basketball (16-8, 16-4 SAC) dominated the defensive side of the ball to win over South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry (9-14, 9-11 SAC), 69-35, on Wednesday evening at the Abney Athletic Center. The 35 point total for the Wolves was the lowest point total for a game by an opponent in program history, with the previous low being 36 on two occasions.

"I thought we did a great job of communicating on defense and protecting the rim," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "That allowed us a chance to get out in transition and score some early baskets."

"We have been working hard on our free throws as well lately and it was nice to see that our effort has paid off," added Barbaree.

"This Saturday is a big day for us as it is our opportunity to raise money for the Play4Kay foundation," stated Barbaree. "We hope that you join us and make a donation."

Anderson's Shameka McNeill continues to play lights out scoring a game-high 31 points in 29 minutes of action. McNeill made nine field goals, including three 3-point baskets, as well as draining all 10 of her foul shots. Graduate Samantha Michel and junior Brittney Stafford each just missed a double-double, scoring nine points apiece and pulling down 10 and 11 rebounds down, respectively. Michel was also credited with five blocked shots. Senior Taylor Hair eclipsed the 1000-point milestone scoring three points, while needing just one-point to add her name as the 15th player in program history to do so. Freshman Diamond McDowell ripped down 10 rebounds, chipping in four points.

The Trojans held the Wolves to just six points in each of the first three quarters of action with Newberry shooting just 11-of-62 (17.7%) from the field and 2-of-18 (11.1%) from beyond the mark for the game.

Anderson outrebounded Newberry 60 - 42 and the Black and Gold made 22-of-26 (84.6) free throws on its way to the lopsided win.

Anderson returns to action on Saturday when it host South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne for the annual Play4Kay game. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
