Women's Hoops to Welcome Six Newcomers in 2010

ANDERSON, S.C. -- When the Anderson women's basketball team makes its South Atlantic Conference debut, the squad will feature six newcomers on the squad as announced by head coach Jim Brunelli.

The Trojans have added Tilde Ahlin, Dagny Langford, Kimberly Major, Monette Thomas, Maura Wood and Emily Willoughby to the roster for the upcoming 2010-11 season as AU will be bidding for its eighth consecutive NCAA appearance.

"I'm very excited about this recruiting class," Brunelli said. "We have addressed some needs and recruited outstanding student-athletes. This group will mesh nicely with our veteran players and we look forward to our first season in the South Atlantic Conference."

Ahlin is a 6-3 forward who is transferring after one season at Barry University. She saw action in 30 games while starting 29 contests and averaged 6.9 points per game, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists as the Lady Buccaneers posted a 21-10 record after advancing to the first round of the NCAA D-II South Region Tournament last season. The native of Sodertalje, Sweden, averaged 15 points per game and six rebounds at Igelstavikens Gymnasium, while shooting 45 percent from the floor and 38 percent from beyond the arc during her senior year in high school. "Tilde is a great get for our program. Anytime you can land a 6-3 player with NCAA and Swedish national team experience is always a plus. She will be an impact player for our team."

Langford, a 6-2 guard/forward, helped lead coach Rorie Bradley's LaGrange (Ga.) Academy squad to a berth in the second round (quarterfinals) of the Georgia Independent School Association Class AA State Tournament before falling to Tiftarea. She was named to the GISA Class AA all-state team as both a junior and senior, while averaging an impressive double-double for the Lady Warriors with 15.2 points and 11.3 rebounds per game last season. The classmate of AU softball signee Abby Child also garnered 2.1 steals and 2.6 blocked shots in 28 games. "Dagny is a fundamentally sound player who has a lot of versatility for her size. Her ability to play both inside and outside will help our team on both ends of the court."

Major is out of Stephens County High School (Toccoa, Ga.). She averaged 16.8 points, seven rebounds and four steals for coach Jerry Brown's Lady Indians as they advanced to the GHSA's Class AAA State Tournament Sweet 16 last season before falling, 77-74, in double overtime to East Hall. She also lettered in track & field, finishing fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.260 in the Georgia High School state track meet last season. Major also notched a fifth-place at the state meet in 2007 in the 100m dash and collected a sixth-place finish in the long jump that year. "Kimberly brings a lot of speed and athletic ability to this team. She will be able to push the tempo on offense and possesses play-making abilities on the defensive end."

Thomas averaged a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds, last season for the Paulding County (Ga.) Lady Patriots, who compete in the GHSA's Region 7-AAAA. A 5-10 forward/guard, Thomas also collected two steals per game. "Monette is a hard-working power forward that will make an impact on the defensive end. Her ability to rebound and defend aggressively will help immensely."

Wood, a 6-2 center from Fairfield Central High School in Winnsboro, S.C., averaged seven points and a notable 10 rebounds and five blocked shots per contest for coach Ashley Johnson's Griffins last season. "Maura will see action at the center position. Her shot-blocking and rebounding skills will help our team on the defensive end."

Willoughby notched a team-leading 15.2 points per game last season at Wando High School while helping lead the Lady Warriors to an 18-7 record during the 2009-10 campaign. The 5-9 guard earned all-state honors and also grabbed 3.8 rebounds and handed out 2.2 assists per game. "Emily is a solid basketball player on both ends of the floor. She ranked in the top three in 3-point shooting in the state, so her ability to shoot the ball from beyond the arc is outstanding.

The Trojans wrapped up the 2009-10 season by winning seven of their last eight regular-season games, then claimed three consecutive wins at home in the Conference Carolinas Tournament en route to earning their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, continuing a streak that began in 2004.
