Trojans Stumble at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Three players reached double figures, but the Anderson women's basketball team dropped a 76-57 decision at Newberry in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. With the win, Newberry improved to 8-2, and stayed unbeaten at home during the 2009-10 campaign, posting a perfect 5-0 record. The Trojans fell to 3-4 on the season. The game was tied five times over the first 12 minutes of the contest, with the Trojans grabbing a 14-12 lead at the 13:12 mark when Alissa Diaz made the steal and Shanice Wilson found Alexa Neal for the jumper, then both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes. The homestanding scarlet and gray snapped the tie on a basket by Leeara Creet, but AU's Neal answered on the other end with 7:49 remaining to knot the score, 16-16, for the final time of the game. Newberry managed to build a 10-point cushion over the next five minutes as Anderson went cold from the field and committed some untimely turnovers. But with 2:23 remaining before the break, AU rallied to trim the deficit to just five, as Siniard, Wilson and Breonda Shannon all scored for the Trojans and Newberry led, 34-29, at the half. Anderson opened the second half ice-cold from the field, connecting on just one of its first 10 shots from the field, and Newberry capitalized on Trojans' drought by pushing out to a 56-35 lead midway through the final frame. "We started out well and could have been in better shape in the first half without the turnovers," Anderson head coach Jim Brunelli said. "I thought we came out uninspired to start the second half." The Trojans swiped 14 steals on the afternoon and scored 19 points on 20 turnovers by the scarlet and gray, but were unable to overcome Newberry's 46-33 rebounding advantage. Senior guard Shanice Wilson scored a team-high 16 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, while junior guard Alexa Neal added 12 points and freshman center Maci Siniard tossed in 11 points and collected a team-high six rebounds on the afternoon. Following a break for Christmas of just over two weeks, Anderson returns to the hardwood when the Trojans visit Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action on Monday, Jan. 4. Tip-off for the first game of a doubleheader is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Williams Gym.
