Barton Holds Off Trojans

WILSON, N.C. -- The Anderson women's basketball team battled on even terms with league-leading Barton College for 30 minutes, but eventually dropped its final regular-season road contest, 84-71, Saturday evening to the Lady Bulldogs in Conference Carolinas action at the Wilson Center. The Lady Bulldogs snapped a 53-53 tie with a 10-0 spurt midway through the second half and held off the Trojans down the stretch after AU climbed within seven points with exactly six minutes on the clock. Anderson (15-10, 14-6 Conference Carolinas), which is battling for position in the conference tournament, finds itself in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings, along with Belmont Abbey and Mount Olive. The setback broke the Trojans' five-game winning streak, but AU has still claimed wins in six of its last eight contests heading into its final two-game homestand of the season. The lone loss for the Lady Bulldogs was a two-point setback at Queens in early January, and Barton (19-1, 20-5 CC) edged out to a double-digit advantage with 11:30 left in the opening half. The deficit held strong for a six-minute span, with Barton opening its largest lead of the half, 30-17, at the 5:47 mark. But the Trojans refused to go away, chipping a 10-point disadvantage to just three at halftime. Anderson closed the half by scoring seven unanswered points, as junior guard Lauren Beeson drained a 3-pointer, senior guard nailed a jumper and guard Ashley Abed added two free throws with 30 seconds remaining. The Trojans' momentum carried over into the second stanza, as Alexa Neal's basket knotted the score for the first time of the night and Abed's two from the charity stripe boosted AU into the lead for the first time. Anderson claimed a brief six-point lead, but the Lady Bulldogs evened the score at 43-43 with 15:37 left. The contest featured four ties and three lead changes over the next six minutes, with Barton gaining a 55-53 advantage and as the Trojans went cold from the field, the Lady Bulldogs capitalized and held the Trojans off down the stretch. Anderson closes out the regular season with a three-game homestand, beginning on Monday when the North Greenville Crusaders invade the Abney Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Box Score
