Late Charge Leads Trojans Past Lady Bobcats

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Freshman guard Alissa Diaz gave the Trojans a lead they wouldn't surrender with just under six minutes left in the game and the Anderson women's basketball team held off Lees-McRae, 72-67, in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center. Diaz' score began a stretch of nine unanswered points by Anderson (16-10, 15-6 Conference Carolinas), with the next seven added by another freshman, Maci Siniard. The 6-foot center muscled up for an inside score, then added a three-point play the old-fashioned way and a putback to give AU a 64-58 cushion with 3:21 left in the game. Lees-McRae (4-21, 4-17 CC) rallied to pull within just two points less than two minutes later, but Ashley Abed answered with a basket and the Trojans were a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line inside the final 33 seconds to seal the win. Anderson has won six of their last seven while Lees-McRae has dropped five straight. The Lady Bobcats were a sizzling 54 percent from the floor and 41 percent from three in the contest, while Anderson was 44 percent overall and 34 percent from three. The two clubs traded points through the first six minutes of play until an Amanda Paris 3 gave the Trojans a 10-6 lead with 14:34 to play. However, the Lady Bobcats would battle back three minutes later and take a two-point lead on a Janina Thurua three. Alissa Diaz hit two free throws for Anderson with 8:01 to play to give the game its seventh lead change, 19-17. The eighth lead change came four minutes later when Flowers drained a three to make it 26-24. The final lead change of the half came when Alexa Neal hit a three and Wilson made the final field goal of the half to give the Trojans a 32-29 halftime lead. After the break Anderson, pushed their lead to eight, 37-29, on a another Parris 3-pointer a minute into the half, but four minutes later a Thurua three tied the game at 41. Lees-McRae took a five point lead, 46-41, on a Flowers trey, but Ashley Abed would hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie the game at 46 with 10:48 remaining. From there, the two teams would go back and forth for the next 4:10 before a Diaz' basket gave Anderson the lead for good. Neal led the Trojans with 15 points and was followed with by Siniard, who scored 12 points. Abed added 11 points. For the Lady Bobcats, behind Flowers and Montgomery was Thurua who tailed 14 points. Anderson took advantage of 24 Lees-McRae turnovers and scored 21 points, while the Lady Bobcats score 13 points off of 16 Trojan turnovers. Anderson closes out the regular season on Saturday when Pfeiffer invades the Abney Center on Senior Day, with AU locked in a battle for seeding in the upcoming league tournament that begins Monday night.
