Wolves Eliminate Trojans From SAC Softball Championship

WINGATE, N.C. – Anderson University softball's (28-20) season has come to a close with a, 5-4, loss at the hands of the fourth-seeded Newberry Wolves (29-18) on Friday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex.

Anderson scored first on sophomore Maddie Carpenter's second home run of the tournament, while the Wolves responded in their bottom half of the first to take over the lead, 2-1.

The Trojans plated two more runs in the top-half of the second inning after senior Yas Laureano's double scored senior Olivia Wheeler and a throwing error scored Laureano to give the Black and Gold the, 3-2, advantage.

Newberry used a single and two-run home run to take back the lead at, 4-3. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings with AU pulling back even after a solo home run by junior Hannah Whitaker in the top half of the sixth inning, 4-4.

Anderson held the Wolves scoreless in the bottom of the sixth and the Trojans could not add any insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, despite senior Morgan Charter leading the inning off with a single to left field.

Newberry's lead-off batter singled and was moved over to second base on the successful sacrifice bunt. The Wolves were able to score the winning run on an infield bloop single over first-base to advance and end AU's season.

Junior Laken Maxwell pitched the first inning of game, giving up two hits and two runs before being lifted in favor of freshman Carson Hobbs. Hobbs (12-9) suffered the loss after giving up nine hits and three runs.

Newberry moves on to face Carson-Newman, with the winner moving on to face Wingate in the championship.
