Timely Hitting Helps Lift Trojans To Doubleheader Sweep Over North Greenville

ANDERSON, S.C. – No. 14 Anderson University softball (4-0) used timely hitting in both contests against nonconference opponent North Greenville (0-2) to break open closely contested games to remain undefeated on this young season, winning game one, 6-2, and winning game two, 10-2(6) on Saturday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

"Not much defense today," said head coach Tommy Hewitt. "When that happens we got to out score our opponents and that's what we did."

"I am so glad these 16 play for AU!," added Hewitt.

Anderson fell behind in game one, 1-0, after the Crusaders used a Trojan miscue to push a run across in the top of the fourth inning. The Trojans answered back in the bottom portion of the inning to take a, 2-1, lead.

Senior Kayson Boatner opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning with her fourth home run of the season by drilling a grand slam line drive over the left center field fence.

The Crusaders made some noise late, but the Black and Gold were able to end the threat on a 4-6-3 double play.

Senior Laken Maxwell (1-0) earned the win, pitching 6.1 innings. Maxwell gave up eight hits and two runs, while striking out three batters. Junior Lane Edgington (1-0) pitched the final two outs.

North Greenville scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, holding the Trojans scoreless until giving up two runs in the third inning of play. The Crusaders tied the game in the top of the fifth inning using a couple of Trojan errors. Anderson responded in the bottom half of the inning following a single by freshman Shelby Bandt and a Boatner walk. Senior Morgan Charter answered the call drilling a three-run home run off the scoreboard to give the Black and Gold a, 5-2, lead. Anderson went on to score five more runs in the inning to run rule the Crusaders, 10-2.

Freshman Carson Hobbs (2-0) earned her second win of the season. Hobbs gave up three hits, while striking out one.

Anderson returns to action on Sunday when it hosts nonconference opponent St. Augustine's. First-pitch is slated for 1 pm.
