Wolves Sweep Trojans

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Anderson University softball (22-16, 7-11 SAC) dropped a doubleheader contest with South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry (24-13, 10-6 SAC) on Sunday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex Field. 

In game one, Anderson squandered an 11-2 lead after four and a half innings of play. The Wolves scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and five runs in the bottom half of the fifth to avoid being run ruled. Newberry completed the comeback scoring four runs in their final half inning to defeat the Trojans, 12-11.

The Black and Gold collected 11 hits, with freshman Carson Hobbs, sophomore Maddie Carpenter and seniors Yas Laureano and Olivia Wheeler recording two hits apiece. Wheeler hit a double and home run driving in four runs. Carpenter and Laureano each drove in three runs for the Trojans.

Hobbs pitched 4.1 innings before being relieved by junior Laken Maxwell. Hobbs gave up 11 hits, while striking out four batters. Maxwell pitched .2 innings giving up three runs. Junior Lane Edgington (9-6) suffered the loss after tossing one inning giving up four hits and four runs.

In game two, the Wolves outhit the Trojans 16-2 and outscored AU 17-0 in the five inning shortened game.

Edgington (9-7) got the nod in game two pitching 0.1 innings, giving up three hits, five walks and eight runs. Hobbs closed out the contest pitching 3.2 runs giving up 13 hits and nine runs, while striking out eight.

Anderson steps out of conference action to travel to nonconference opponent Georgia College. First-pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 pm.
