Trojans Split With Mars Hill

ANDERSON, S.C. – The No.16 Anderson University softball team split a pair of games between South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill on Tuesday (Feb. 28) at the AU Softball Complex.

GAME 1

The Trojans were able to get on the scoreboard early in the first inning after base hits from Maddie Carpenter and Morgan Charter, and after Kayson Boatner drew a walk, the bases were loaded. Olivia Wheeler came through with a two-run single to give the team a 2-0 lead.

Mars Hill rallied back in the next two innings on six hits and a Trojan error to take a 4-2 lead. To start off the bottom of the third, Boatner drew her second walk of the game, which was followed by a two-run homer from Wheeler to tie the game at 4-4, as she drove in all four runs for the Trojans.

Once again, the following inning Mars Hill had an answer for the Anderson runs. The Lions picked up three more hits in the top of the fourth, and capitalized on another fielding error to take a 8-4 lead along with five stolen bases in the game. Rebekah Howard settled down in the circle for the bottom of the fourth and kept Anderson off the scoreboard. The Lions went on to cruise to a 9-4 win.

Carson Hobbs pitched 3.2 innings, gave up 10 hits, although six of the eight runs she gave up were unearned. Trinity Queen came in relief to pitch 3.1 scoreless unearned innings, giving up one total run.

Game 2

Kristyn Ezzo and Lane Edgington both tossed scoreless frames in the first two innings. Kayson Boatner launched her 10th home run of the season to give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage after three innings of play.

Mars Hill tied the game in the top half of the fourth after the fifth error of the day by Anderson. Next half inning, Jessica Neadow picked up her first home run of the season to regain a 3-1 lead.

Boatner and Neadow each homered again in their next at bats, blowing the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score at 7-1. Lauren Brakovec came off the bench to pitch hit for Lane Edgington, and immediately homered to left field for the third time this season. Morgan Charter singled to center field to clinch the win, taking down Mars Hill 9-1 in six innings.

Lane Edgington only gave up one hit in six innings of work, one run (unearned) while striking out six. Boatner, Charter, Neadow, and Carson Hobbs had a multi-hit game in the victory.
