Softball Drops Doubleheader at Wingate

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson softball team lost both games of its final regular game against South Atlantic Conference opponent Wingate losing the opener, 1-0, while dropping the nightcap,8-0, Saturday afternoon at the WU Softball Field.

Anderson ends regular season play with a 29-19 overall record and 9-13 in conference play while Wingate moves to 30-14 overall and 15-7 in SAC action.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Junior Augie Pena recorded two of the three hits by the Trojans in game one going 2-for-3. Leadoff hitter Carli Hurtado added a single going 1-for-3 while reaching on a walk.

Wingate's hurler Stacey Houser (18-11) kept the Black and Gold at bay pitching a complete game shut-out, allowing just three hits and striking out six.

Pena (12-5) absorbed the tough loss after giving up five hits while striking out four Bulldogs on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game remained scoreless through four complete innings with the Bulldogs scoring the first and only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wingate was able to take advantage of a base on balls and two singles in the inning to push across its only run needed to defeat the Black and Gold.

Anderson made some noise of its own in the top of the sixth, but could not post any runs to show for it. Freshman Madison Bivins drew a one out walk moving to second on Pena second single of the game. For the second out of the inning, freshman Kasey Grant bounced into a fielder's choice erasing Bivins running from second to third. Sophomore Rachael Barefield was retired to end the threat by the Trojans.

The Trojans battled hard in the bottom of the sixth inning stranding Bulldog runners at first and third. Anderson could not get anything going in the top of the seventh going down in order to end the game.

Wingate 8, Anderson 0 (6 innings)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freshman Micaela Smith led the way at the plate in game two for the Trojans going 1-for-2 driving a double to left center field. Sophomore Caliah Niles added a single up the middle in the top of the sixth combining with Smith for the only two hits allowed by Houser in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs used three home runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead after five innings of play, adding three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game, 8-0.

Houser (19-11) got the nod in game two pitching her second shut-out of the day. The Bulldog hurler allowed just two hits while walking one batter.

Sophomore Randee Bettis (6-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up a total of four hits in four innings of work. Junior Lauren Rudesheim worked one inning in relief allowing four hits and five runs (three earned).

UP NEXT
The Trojans place all focus on the upcoming SAC Tournament that begins on April 28- May 1 in Hartsville, S.C. The official seeding's will be announced by the league office on Monday.
