ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team dropped a pair of games to Newberry College in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex. The Wolves (22-10, 3-3 SAC) won game one 1-0 and picked up a 7-1 triumph in the nightcap.

The Trojans fall to 23-9 overall and 3-3 in conference action with the only other opponent to sweep the Black and Gold this season was Georgia College back on Feb. 6.

Game #1
Newberry 1, Anderson 0

Newberry's Christina Linton opened game one with a home run off of the scoreboard in right centerfield while senior pitcher Maude McCourry (12-5) limited the Trojans to just three hits to earn the 1-0 win.

Anderson's Augie Pena pitched a solid game, despite giving up the long ball to the first batter of the game. Pena held the Wolves to the lone hit for six innings, eventually giving up back to back singles in the seventh inning before striking out Mallory Gerndt to end any threat by the Wolves. Pena (8-3) allowed just three hits while striking out six to take the tough loss for the Trojans.

Freshmen Madison Bivins and Kasey Grant combined for the Trojans three hits. Bivins went 2-for-3 with a single and a double while Grant had an infield single her second time at the plate.

Newberry 7, Anderson 1

Anderson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Carli Hurtado scored after reaching on an infield single and later scoring on back to back wild pitches.

Newberry answered with its own run in the top half of the fourth inning. Shortstop Hailey Drawe led the inning off with a double while moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jeri Loffler. McCourry doubled to center field to score Drawe from third to tie the game at 1-1.

Junior pitcher Devon Morrison held the Trojans at bay scattering five hits and striking out eight. Newberry put six more runs on the board, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to set the final score.

Hurtado hit 2-for-4 while scoring Anderson's lone run. Bivins added to her hit total for the day, 4-for-6, going 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

Sophomore Randee Bettis (5-2) pitched five innings, giving up seven hits while striking out five to earn her second loss of the season.

Anderson returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Mars Hill to continue conference play. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
