Men’s Soccer Hosts Brevard on Wednesday

ANDERSON, S.C. - After a road setback at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, Anderson University men's soccer completes its home schedule this week, beginning with a South Atlantic Conference showdown on Wednesday against Brevard, as the team will honor its seniors for Senior Day. Kickoff from Trojan Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m.

The Trojans
After splitting last week's contests, Anderson enters Wednesday with a 6-7 overall record with an even 4-4 mark in conference play, as the .500 record places it alone in sixth place in the league standings with 12 points. AU sits two points behind Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman for fourth place and is one point clear of Coker who is in seventh. With three SAC matches remaining on the schedule, AU looks to seal a spot in the SAC Tournament for a chance at its fifth straight SAC Tournament championship appearance.

Anderson's top-three goal scorers on the season all increased their totals last week as Lars Zimmerman recorded the equalizer and the game-winner against Mount Olive on Wednesday, while junior Andre Carle opened AU's scoring before Zimmerman's heroics. Freshman Magnus Larsen tallied the Trojans' lone goal in the 2-1 setback to LMU last Saturday.

With the trio's scoring spree, Carle enters the week as the team's leading scorer with five goals and 13 points, while Larsen follows with four goals and 10 points. Zimmerman is third on the list with three goals as he is ahead of Brad Du Plooy and Aaron Roberson who have one goal apiece.

In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Bo Haug has played in over 1,021 minutes this season and has recorded 30 saves. Haug's 1.32 goals-against average ranks fifth in the SAC as he currently ranks fourth in wins with five.

The Tornados
Brevard snapped a three-match setback streak on Saturday when it knocked off Catawba, 2-1, in Salisbury. In the winless stretch, the Tornados were out-scored 12-2, headlined by a 7-0 blanking at Tusculum on Oct. 8. After the win against the Indians, Brevard comes to the Upstate with a 4-9-1 overall record with a 2-6 mark in the conference, placing BC in 11th place as it fights to move up to eighth place and the final spot in the conference tournament.

Despite its record, BC is tied for ninth in goals scored with 15, matching Anderson's total for the year. On the opposite side, Brevard has allowed the most goals scored in the league with 37, including giving up the seven goals to TC, five to Queens and Winthrop and four to Emmanuel. Freshman forward Sergi Monso currently leads the squad with four goals and 10 points, as he is the only BC player with 20 or more shots on the year with 29. Junior Andrew Gallowitch follows the newcomer with three goals, despite starting just six matches.

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Heath Turner has started 13 matches this season and has totaled 52 saves. Turner is responsible for two clean sheets on the year, while ranking 12th in goals-against average with a 2.04 mark.

The Series
Brevard stunned Anderson in last season's meeting with a 1-0 victory over the Trojans, marking BC's first win over AU since the teams became SAC rivals in 2010. The only goal of that match was Brevard's first goal against the Black and Gold in three previous meetings.

NOTE: Fans are encouraged to wear pink as both the men's and women's soccer teams will be raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The men's soccer team will also recognize its eight seniors: Corbin Bowers, Martin Brain, Alex Delpy, Bernd Muxel, Ty Reales, Mattias Schyberg, William Treichler, Lars Zimmerman.
