ANDERSON, S.C. - After a memorable 1-0 victory over longtime rival Erskine on Wednesday, Anderson University men's soccer returns to its South Atlantic Conference schedule on Saturday when it heads to Hartsville to take on Coker. Kickoff from the Coker Soccer Field is slated for 7 p.m.
The Trojans
Despite getting off to a slow start to the season, which saw AU
drop its opening two matches of the year, the Trojans have
responded with back-to-back victories over Catawba (2-0) and
Erskine (1-0). With the winning streak, Anderson holds an even 2-2
record as it begins to enter the heart of its 2014 schedule.
Freshman Magnus Larsen found himself as the hero on Wednesday when his 86th minute goal handed the Trojans the win over Erskine. With the victory, the men's soccer team gives Anderson the first point in the Beville Cup standings. With the point in hand, AU looks to retain the Cup for the third consecutive year.
Larsen's goal also gives him the team-lead in the category with two, while teammates Andre Carle and Brad Du Plooy also have goals on the year. Currently, Du Plooy is the only Trojan with a goal and an assist through the first four contests.
In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Bo Haug has earned both of AU's victories on the year, making four saves in his three starts. With two shutouts under his belt, the Stuttgart, Germany native has eight career clean sheets after posting six shutouts during his freshman campaign.
The Cobras
After a nine-win season in 2013, Coker is still searching for its
first victory of 2014, as it enters the weekend with a 0-3-2
overall record and a 0-1 mark in conference play. The Cobras are
currently on a two-match losing streak, falling to SAC rival
Lincoln Memorial last Saturday and nonconference opponent Lander on
Wednesday. In five matches this season, Coker has played in three
extra time matches, including two reaching double overtime.
Despite the slow start to the year, senior Jordan Snell is responsible for three of Coker's four goals on the year. While also leading the team in shots with 15, Snell ranks third in the conference with his three goals and 15 shots. Rounding out Coker's scoring, teammate Juan Arreola scored once this season.
Goalkeeper Kyndle Cobb has played in every minute for the Cobras, making 19 saves, which ranks fifth in the conference.
The Series
Last season marked the first meeting between Anderson and Coker as
SAC members, as the Cobras captured a double-overtime 2-1 win over
the Trojans at Trojan Stadium. Coker's Stephen Scrivens scored in
the 109th minute from a Snell corner to hand Coker its first-ever
SAC win.
After Anderson's move to the SAC prior to the 2010 season, the Trojans and the Cobras have met twice with Coker winning both meetings. Anderson's last win over its in-state rivals came in the 2009 regular season, AU's final season in Conference Carolinas, as the Trojans picked up a road win, 2-0.
