TRAVELERS REST, S.C. – Anderson University freshman Reece Coleman captured his first collegiate title after being named co-champion of the rain-shortened Southern Tide Classic Tuesday morning, while the Trojan men's golf team claimed third place at the event.
The event, originally scheduled as a two-day, 54-hole tournament, was shortened to 36 holes due to the rain blanketing the Upstate early Tuesday.
Belmont Abbey, which is ranked 49th nationally by Golfstat, won the tournament by a seven-stroke margin over runner-up North Greenville. The Trojans finished one shot further back in third place, with 18th-ranked Limestone claiming the fourth slot. No. 48 Barton held the fifth spot, while King finished sixth. North Georgia and Limestone (B) shared seventh place, with Erskine finishing ninth.
Coker, Southern Wesleyan and Erskine (B) finished out the 12-team field.
Coleman finished atop the individual leaderboard, alongside Erskine's Alberto Avila, with the duo winning the tourney by two strokes over Limestone's Gage Carnes, Belmont Abbey's Jack Warren and NGU's Evans Lewis.
Junior Cal Brock posted a two-round 146 and finished in a five-way deadlock for 11th place, with freshman Anthony Sutton carding a 147 and finishing in a tie for 15th. Senior Jake Miller shared 35th place following a 153, while Colt Martin claimed a share of 57th place after carding a 160 on Monday. Senior Drake McAlister rounded out the Trojan contingent in 66th place after carding a 165.
Following a three-week layoff, AU will return to action, March 23-24, at the Lander Bearcat Classic in Greenwood, S.C.
