TROJANS FIGHT OFF FALCONS--MAKE SEMI-FINALS

TROJANS FIGHT OFF FALCONS--MAKE SEMI-FINALS

MISENHEIMER, NC--Beating the same team three times in a season is difficult, but when Anderson University point guard and leading scorer, Brandon Young, fouled out with 9:47 remaining in a Conference Carolinas quarter-final matchup at Pfeiffer University, that task may all the sudden have become impossible. With their captain and his 12 points on the bench, however, a savvy Trojan team showed great resolve, as junior Jamelle Lowery seamlessly took over where Young left off. Lowery put up 12 of his own to go with 4 assists and 2 boards in route to a 102-101 Anderson University victory at Merner Gymnasium. Freshman Nick Trull led 6 Trojans who scored in double figures with a game-high 27 on 9-11 shooting. But no shot was bigger than Trull's last, as he feathered in a finger roll from just behind the backboard with :57 remaining that proved to be the game-winner. The Trojans needed every strong performance they could muster to combat the Falcons five-in five-out bottomless bench. Jarret Johnson was up to the task, just missing a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds; joining Mr. Johnson in the board room was sophomore Stephen Cobb, who grabbed 8 of his own to go along with 12 points. Kevis Cornwell slashed and spun all night long, as he had 19 big points, on 6-12 shooting from the field, 1-1 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. The Trojans were not without contributions on the low block. Trey Britton fought hard on the interior to put up 9 points--highlighted by two gym-shaking second half dunks. Britton shot a perfect 3-3 from the field, picked up 2 rebounds and blocked a shot. The big men owned the stage as the game drew to a close. Freshman Taylor Shugart made a great stop on Pfeiffer's James Crowder, but when Crowder grabbed his own board with :09 left, Shugart made enough contact to commit a personal foul. On the heels of two misses with the Trojans up 102-101, the Falcons' Robert McGriff came down with the rebound and called a timeout; with :04.7 remaining Pfeiffer got one last look, but with a tough zone that the Trojans had employed for most of the second half, they made the stop. The win propels the Trojans into the Conference Carolinas Semi-Final Round for the first time since 2002, when all-tournament point guard, Clay Huggins, led the Anderson College Trojans to the conference tournament finals, only to fall to Belmont Abbey. Since that loss, the Trojans have never gone into Misenheimer, NC and won. In fact, until the 2008-2009 season Anderson had only beaten Pfeiffer once since 2002. But this night meant another step toward a title. "We just made one more play than they did tonight," said Trojan head coach Jason Taylor. "They are a great team--they really are; we are fortunate to get a win and move on." The Trojans prepare for the Barton College Bulldogs next, who they will face on Thursday, March 5. The team will travel to Wilson, NC to take on the 2007 National Champs in the Dog House. Tipoff is set for 7:00pm. Complete Box Score
