Flames Burn Trojans

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Seth Curry scored a game-high 22 points and Johnny Stephene poured in a career-high 14 points, as the Liberty Flames (7-2) grabbed a non-conference win over visiting Anderson (3-4), Monday night inside the Vines Center, 88-46. A Jarret Johnson bucket at 18:35 put Anderson ahead by two points, 4-2, but Liberty quickly went on a 13-2 run, grabbing a 15-6 advantage. Curry and Kyle Ohman hit back-to-back three-point buckets, with Ohman's connection capping the run at 14:48. The Trojans mounted a mini-comeback, reeling off a 9-3 run, which cut the Liberty advantage to three points, 18-15. A trey by Brandon Young at 12:30 finished off the visitors' run. Liberty then took control of the first half, holding the Trojans to four points for the next 11 minutes, as the Flames reeled off a 20-4 run, taking a 38-19 lead. Two Stephene layups bookended a Chris Summers bucket in the paint to cap the run. Stephene's two markers at 1:35 finished off the surge. Anderson broke the run with a triple by Nick Trull at 1:03, cutting the Liberty lead to 16 points, 38-22. A Bill Weaver basket and an Anthony Smith layup at 31.9 put Liberty up by 20 points, 42-22, going into the intermission. Liberty shot 60.0 percent (18-of-30) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from three-point range, during the first half. Anderson connected on 33.3 percent (9-of-27) during the opening stanza, including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from beyond the arc. The Flames jumped out of the gate on a 20-9 run, extending their lead to 31 points, 62-31, via a Curry trey at 12:42. Liberty reached its largest lead at the 4:00 mark, 45 points, when Stephene connected on a three-pointer from the corner, extending the Flames' lead to 82-37, as the home team cruised to victory. Liberty finished the game hitting 62.1 percent (36-of-58) from the floor, including 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from three-point land. The Flames won the rebound war, 37-27, and managed to utilize their bench, as 10 players played double figures in minutes. Curry led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three-point range. Stephene poured in a career-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Smith tallied 12 points, while Brolin Floyd chipped in 10 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Anderson connected on 30.8 percent of its shots (16-of-52), including 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from three-point land, for the game.
