Shugart's Tip Knocks Out Knights

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Taylor Shugart's putback at the final buzzer capped a late 8-0 to give Anderson University a 73-72 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian in a Conference Carolinas game Saturday afternoon. The Knights led the entire second half until Shugart converted on a desperation putback attempt off a missed lay-up attempt by Jarret Johnson as time expired. Anderson evens its overall record to 7-7 while remaining in fourth place in the Conference Carolinas standings with a 5-2 league ledger. Anderson has won four of its last five. Joseph Gripper scored a game-high 22 points for the Knights, who fall to 3-11 overall and 1-7 in the conference. SAPC has lost five straight games. The first half was a back-and-forth affair that featured nine ties and 15 lead changes. An three-point play by freshman Nick Trull in the final minute tied the game at 38-38. Trull scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the first half. Gripper and Taiwon Grooms both had 11 points at the intermission to lead all scorers. St. Andrews scored the first five points of the second half on a three-point play by Zack Garst and a lay-in by Colby Poe. The Knights maintained a single-digit advantage for the rest of the period until Shugart's heroics. Grooms made a field goal to increase the Knights lead to seven points, 72-65, with less than two minutes left. However, Anderson would score the final eight points to complete the improbable comeback. Brandon Young started the rally with a lay-up. With the alternating possession arrow in favor of Anderson, the Trojans got the ball back on a jump ball win and Shugart closed the gap to four by making 1-of-2 free throw attempts. After a St. Andrews turnover, Young drilled a 3-pointer with 48.9 seconds left to pull AU within one at 72-71. The Knights had a pair of good shots in the paint on the ensuing possession but both tries missed their mark. Trull fired a potential game-winning 3-pointer with six seconds left. The errant try deflected off a St. Andrews defender and out of bounds, giving Anderson another chance. On the inbounds play, Johnson drove the lane and put up a highly-contested layup that went long and deflected right to Shugart on the weak side, who tipped in the game-winner. The Trojans had five players score in double figures. Young tallied 14; Shugart and Stephen Cobb netted 11 apiece; and Kevis Cornwell added 10. Cornwell just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds as Anderson narrowly won the battle of the boards, 37-36. Cornwell also made a game-high four steals. Shugart put-back attempt was his eighth board of the game. Gripper scored his 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting including a perfect 3-for-3 on launches from downtown. Grooms followed with 16 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Garst and Poe both tallied nine points with Garst adding six rebounds. SAPC out shot AU, 44.8% (26-of-58) compared to 39.7% (25-of-63), but the Trojans made nine 3-pointers compared to six by the Knights. Both clubs were 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the charity stripe.
