Trojans Gun Down Eagles, 117-109

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University outscored Carson-Newman 18-10 in the second overtime to pull out a dramatic 117-109 victory over the Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. The game set Anderson school records for the most points in a single game by an AU team and the most points by both teams in a single game at the Abney Center since AU joined Division II in 1999. Anderson, 3-3 overall, led 47-42 at the half and led by 10 points twice and 11 points once in the second half. Carson-Newman, 4-5 overall, trailed by eight -- 83-75 -- with 5:20 remaining before going on a quick 11-0 run for an 86-83 lead with 1:07 remaining. A three-point play by Anderson's Trey Britton tied the game at 86 with 51 seconds remaining. With 1.8 seconds remaining, Nick Trull had a chance to give Anderson the lead, but he missed two free throws to send the game to the first overtime. There were six ties and three lead changes in the first overtime. A 3-point basket by Jordan Dixon gave the Eagles a 98-95 lead with 1:17 to play, but Trull answered with a trey at the 1:05 mark to tie the game at 98. After the two teams swapped single free throws to tie the game at 99, Anderson had possession with five seconds remaining, but Brandon Young's 3-point attempt bounced off the rim at the buzzer. After three more ties -- the 14th and final one at 105 -- Carson-Newman took its final lead on two free throws by Cameron Sharp with 2:33 remaining. Anderson then took the lead for good -- the seventh lead change of the game -- with 2:16 left when Young scored his only 3-point goal of the game to give the Trojans a 108-107 lead. Anderson made five free throws in the final 28 seconds to close it out. Trull came off the bench to lead all scorers with a career-high 30 points. He was 11-for-19 from the field and 6-for-10 from behind the arc. Kevis Cornwell and Jarret Johnson added 18 points apiece for the Trojans, Young finished with 17, and Britton tallied 11. Young played all 50 minutes for Anderson. Carson-Newman was led by Andrew Johnson with 18 points, Darron Maxtion with 17 points, Joey Cameron and Bobby Guyton with 13 points apiece, and Jordan Dixon and Kevin Hare with 12 each. Both teams were sizzling in the first half from the field. Anderson shot 66 percent (20-30) while Carson-Newman shot 61 percent. Carson-Newman finished the game at 53 percent while Anderson managed 48 percent. Led by Trull, Anderson was 11-for-26 (42 percent) from behind the arc. The Eagles held a 46-42 advantage on the boards. Hare had eight rebounds to lead Carson-Newman. Johnson and Trull were Anderson's top rebounders with eight apiece. Anderson travels to Lynchburg, Va., to face Division I Liberty Monday night before returning home on Thursday night to play host to North Georgia.
