ANDERSON, SC - A raucous crowd filed into the Abney Center Thursday night for a basketball game, but what ensued was a high-flying track meet, as the Anderson University Trojans (12-8, 14-13) downed the Pfeiffer University Falcons (13-7, 16-11) 105-98. Senior night was for veteran point guard Ryan Freeman, who started the game and got some great looks. The game was then taken over by the Trojans youthful core, as 6 players put up double figures. Brandon Young had a game high 27 points and 4 assists. Freshman Taylor Shugart, who had 14 points and 7 rebounds, battled inside along with Trey Britton, who also contributed a gutty 10 points. Jarret Johnson handled the ball more than normal helping Brandon Young to beat a smothering Pfeiffer press; the athletic Johnson was able to push the action for the Trojans, scoring 16 points and grabbing 4 steals. Freshman guard Nick Trull showed no fear as he put the ball on the floor early and often getting to the hoop on multiple occasions--Trull had 20 points, only 6 came from beyond the arc. Kevis Cornwell helped out in typical fashion dishing out 6 assists, and putting up 11 points. The Trojans dictated tempo all night long--every time Pfeiffer made a run or tied it up, Anderson had an answer for them. "This team just never ceases to amaze me," said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. "I am just so very proud of them. This is the program's first winning season since '02, and these kids deserve it. They don't quit." Not since the 2001-2002 CVAC regular season championship team have the Trojans had a winning regular season record. Youth and resiliency don't typically go hand in hand, but this Trojan basketball squad is surprising people every day. Anderson finishes the regular season fifth in Conference Carolinas competition. With a first round bye, the Trojans will head back to Pfeiffer on Monday, March 2nd for their third meeting of the year versus the Falcons. The two teams have combined this year for a staggering 444 points, so get ready for some offense. Tip off will be at 7:00pm in Misenheimer, NC Game Stats
