MARS HILL, N.C. -- Mars Hill won its home opener Saturday afternoon with an 89-69 decision over Anderson University. MHC improves to 2-1 while Anderson falls to 1-2 on the season. P.J. Gore led MHC to the win with 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and the same number of assists. Jamarl Glen followed with a game-high 17 points while Danny Sanders recorded his second double-double on the young season with 12 points and 10 boards. Andy Miller and Tinos Brozos rounded out the double-digit scorers for MHC adding 12 and 10 points, respectively. Eleven players scored in the contest for the Lions. MHC hit 48.6 percent (34-70) of its shots and won the battle of the boards, 50-30. The Lions scored 58 points in the paint, 29 off Anderson turnovers, 24 off the break and 20 second chance points. MHC also received 35 points from its bench. Jarret Johnson led Anderson with 16 points and six rebounds. Nick Trull followed nine points, two assists and a pair of steals. The first 12 minutes of the game were closely played. With the score tied at 22, Jarred Pickering converted two free throws to give the Lions a 24-22 lead at the 7:23 mark. Mars Hill never trailed again. The Lions outscored the Trojans 18-12 in the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 42-34 lead at the half. The second half was all Mars Hill. The Lions went on a 26-10 run to take a 24-point lead (68-44) with 12:19 left after Miller hit 1-of-2 shots at the charity stripe. Anderson would trim the Lions' lead to 16 points with 9:27 to play but the Trojans would get no closer. MHC responded by outscoring Anderson 11-2 in the next five minutes to take its largest lead of 25 points. Anderson opens Conference Carolinas play Tuesday at Belmont Abbey.
