Trojans Open Conference Series with Loss to Tusculum

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson baseball team opened a three-game South Atlantic Conference series with a 13-4 loss to visiting Tusculum, Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson (12-24, 3-13 SAC) suffered its ninth setback in its last 10 decisions, while Tusculum (25-14, 12-4 SAC) won its second consecutive decision and has won four of its last six outings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore Chase Stephens notched the Trojans' lone extra-base hit of the night with a two-RBI double in the ninth inning, while sophomore Will Lindsey was 1-for-3 on the night and also reached on a walk. Redshirt junior Matthew Overton added a single and an eighth-inning walk, with junior Cody Adams posting a single and scoring a run in the seventh inning.

Redshirt senior John McMicking (1-6) absorbed the loss after allowing six runs on six hits. The right-hander walked four batters and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans posted two of their five hits in the opening inning, with sophomore Chandler Castleberry drawing a two-out walk and crossing the plate two batters later, when Overton laced a single into center field.

Tusculum countered with a pair of runs in the second inning, four in the fourth frame and built a 9-1 advantage with three more runs in the sixth inning. The Pioneers plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning, with AU scoring a solo run in the bottom of the inning, when Adams singled up the middle with one out and scored when Lindsey drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

The freshman tandem of Cooper Woods and Jacob Kohns worked backto-back, two-out walks in AU's final at-bat and both scored on Stephens' double to the gap in right-center to round out the scoring.

Chandler Castleberry has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.

The Trojans and Pioneers will close out their three-game series with a Saturday afternoon twin bill. First-pitch at Memorial Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
