ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson baseball team opened a four-game homestand with an 11-6 setback to longtime rival Erskine, in nonconference action, Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (11-20) suffered its fifth straight setback, while Erskine (16-15) has won three of its last four decisions and defeated the Trojans for the second time this season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore Dalton Shaw was 3-for-5 at the plate, with a pair of singles and drove in two runs with an eighth-inning double. Classmate Will Lindsey was also 3-for-5 at the plate, with three singles and scored a run. Redshirt sophomore Chandler Castleberry added a pair of singles and crossed the plate once, while Brandon Odachowski drove in two runs with a fourth-inning double.
Senior right-hander Stetson Scott (1-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings of work on the mound. The Clayton, Ga., native walked two batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first three innings, the Flying Fleet posted a five-run fourth inning, while the Trojans countered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth on Odachowski's double to the gap in right-center that plated both Lindsey and Castleberry.
Erskine added three more runs in the sixth and built a 10-2 advantage by score two more in the eighth frame. AU took advantage of two walks, a pair of singles and Shaw's clutch, two-out, two-run double to climb within 10-6 before the Fleet added another run in the top of the ninth to round out the scoring.
NOTABLES
• Erskine stranded nine runners, while the Trojans left eight runners on base.
• Chandler Castleberry extended his hitting streak to six games.
• Will Lindsey has reached base safely in his last 17 straight games.
• Coupled with the men's golf finish at the Bearcat Classic earlier Tuesday, the Flying Fleet captured 1 ½ points in the battle for the Beville Cup – The Trojans lead the overall chase, 7-3 ½.
