CLEMSON, S.C. -- Anderson University had two athletes compete in the Orange and Purple Classic on May 10. Aaron LaGarde competed in the triple jump and the long jump and Justin Smith competed in the hammer throw. LaGarde finished second place in both the long jump and the triple jump. LaGarde's triple jump of 50-3 automatically qualified him to participate in the NCAA Division national meet. He currently holds school records in both the long jump and the triple jump. LaGarde is ranked number five in Division II in the triple jump. He is the first Anderson track and field athlete to qualify for the national meet. The national meet will be held at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. LaGarde will compete on Saturday, May 24, at 5:20 p.m. PST. LaGarde also recorded a personal best and provisionally qualified for the Division II national meet in the long jump with a leap of 23-8. Smith finished eighth in the hammer with a throw of 147-11. Smith holds school records in the hammer (149-8), and the weight throw (40-3).
