Trojans Defend Home Turf with 21-5 Victory Over Indians

Anderson, S.C.- The Anderson women's lacrosse team secured its third conference win with its 21-5 victory over Catawba in dominant fashion at Spero Financial Field Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans put on a show offensively with five different players scoring, yet it was a balanced effort that led to the win, with the defense holding the Lady Indians to just five goals and 12 shots on goal.

How it Happened

Alicia Cannon, who came into the matchup leading the conference in draw controls, won the first draw control and scored off the fast break, all within the first 15 seconds of regulation. After four minutes of scoreless play, Cannon capitalized on a free position shot, bringing the Trojans to a 2-0 start by the 10 minute marker. About halfway through the first period, a foul from the Lady Indians led the Trojans to a woman-up situation, which Laine Stanton took full advantage of, grabbing her sixteenth goal of the season. Anderson kept the scoring train going with a goal from Hannah Thomas off the free position shot. And with just under two minutes left, Catawba's Joey Baillie found the back of the cage, limiting the damage to 4-1. The Trojans responded with two back-to-back goals from Gwen Ontiveros, both assisted by Alicia Cannon, putting the Trojans up by five (6-1) heading into the second period.

It was a scoring clinic by the Trojans in the second, scoring seven unanswered with goals coming from Hannah Thomas, Alicia Cannon, Gwen Ontiveros, and Laine Stanton. Anderson took the twelve goal lead, heading into halftime 13-1.

Anderson opened up the third period with all the momentum in their favor, scoring six more unanswered goals. Grace Van Dinter struck first, off the assist from Thomas. Alicia Cannon converted on 2-4 free position shot attempts while also adding two more, one with the help of Gwen Ontiveros, who tied her career high in assists (2). Laine Stanton kept adding to the score tally, taking one herself to the back of the net. Anderson entered the fourth and final stretch up 19-1.

Catawba finally started to find their groove in the final period, but not until Gwen Ontiveros struck again, all with the help of Alicia Cannon, earning her third and final assist of the day. The Lady Indians put one on the board after around three minutes, but Hannah Thomas responded with yet another goal for the Black and Gold finishing her four goal, seven point day. Not even three consecutive goals from Catawba could put a dent in Anderson's lead, as they finished off their fifth conference matchup 21-4.
