Trojans Fall to Cavaliers 13-12

Wise, Va.- The Anderson University women's lacrosse team fell to the Cavaliers from UVA Wise on Saturday afternoon. After scoring first and leading almost the whole first half, the black and gold would not be able to overcome the Cavs.

The score was tied seven times throughout the game with the lead changing three times. The Cavaliers took the lead 12-11 with six minutes to play in the game, despite a late goal by the Trojans, they were unable to overcome the two goal deficit. Anderson dropped to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Scoring Summary

Anderson opened the game with two man-down goals. The first coming from Alicia Cannon unassisted before Gwen Ontiveros scored a free position goal putting the Trojans up two. UVA Wise scored two tying the game before Ontiveros netted her second free position shot. Hannah Thomas followed with two quick goals, the first unassisted and the second from a free position shot. The Cavaliers connected in the final 30 seconds with their third goal. Trojans led 5-3 heading into the second period.

The Cavaliers outscored the Trojans 4-2 in the second half. Alicia Cannon opened the period with an unassisted goal before UVA Wise netted 3 of their own tying the score at 6 all. Laine Stanton put the Trojans up 7-6 when she scored unassisted with just over five minutes to play in the half. The Cavaliers would score one more to tie the game at 7-7 heading into halftime.

The third period saw back and forth action between the Trojans and Cavs. UVA Wise scored first putting them ahead 8-7. Anderson scored two unassisted, one from Hannah Thomas and one from Gwen Ontiveros tying at eight and then going ahead 9-8. The Cavaliers scored two more goals in the final five minutes unanswered which gave them the 10-9 lead heading into the final quarter.

Alicia Cannon opened the fourth period with an unassisted goal tying the score again 10-10. UVA Wise answered one minute later taking the lead. Lili Bouwma connected on an assist from Megan Cann tying the score at 11. Two more goals from the Cavaliers put them up 13-11 with just over three minutes to play. Alicia Cannon answered with an unassisted goal closing the gap to just one goal. A late turnover by AU would give possession to UVA Wise with less than a minute to play securing the Cavs' victory.
