Armstrong Atlantic Women Take First Round Lead

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Katherine Hooks shot a 3-under 69 to lead Armstrong Atlantic State to a 311 team score and a 13-shot lead over Pfeiffer after the first round of the 2007 Anderson University Women's Invitational Monday afternoon at Brookstone Meadows. Hooks' individual score and Armstrong's team score both were tournament records at the par-72, 6,100-yard Brookstone course. Hooks is the first female player to break par in the seven-year history of the event. The previous low round was 72 by Beth Kirkham of Wingate in 2005. The previous low round by a team was 312 by West Florida in 2004. In hot and humid conditions, Hooks started her round on the hilly Brookstone layout with birdies on three of the first five holes. She made the turn at 2-under then made eight pars and one birdie on the back nine to complete her record round. Hooks was the only player in the field to finish the first round under par on the par-4 holes (-2) and the par-3 holes (-1). Pfeiffer is second at 324, Tusculum is third at 335, Spartanburg Methodist is fourth at 340, and Limestone is fifth at 343. Host Anderson is tied with Mount Olive for sixth place at 347. Kristen Moberg of Mount Olive is second in the individual standings with a 76. Anderson's Sophie Dembroski is third at 77, and Emily Palenkas of Tusculum and Brittany Beltran of Pfeiffer are tied for fourth at 78. Christina Crovetti of UNC Pembroke provided a first-round highlight with a hole-in-one on the par-3, 160-yard 11th hole. The second round will be played Tuesday morning. 2007 AU Women's Invitational First Round Results
