ANDERSON, S.C. - Using a stellar defensive effort, Anderson avenged an earlier setback this season by defeating Newberry, 59-44, in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson (9-12, 6-7 SAC) won its second straight and third in the last four outings by holding Newberry (12-9, 7-6 SAC) to 25.4 percent (16-of-63) shooting from the field - the lowest by a Trojan opponent this season.
The Trojans capitalized on Newberry's 1-of-9 shooting early to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 10-4 advantage with seven unanswered points, as junior forward Breonda Shannon notched five of her 13 points on the night during the outburst.
Newberry stayed close and eventually reclaimed a 15-12 lead with just less than five minutes remaining in the first half, but the Trojans closed the frame with nine unanswered points to set the halftime margin at 21-15.
Anderson opened a double-digit lead early in the final half and
steadily pushed out to a 45-28 advantage with 8:02 left.
Junior guard Alissa Diaz lead all scorers with 16 points, while
recording three blocked shots and three steals. Shannon added 13
points and shared game-high rebounding honors with seven, while
Amanda Parris netted 10 points and grabbed two steals on the
night.
Freshman guard Zara Pearson and sophomore Ellie Gleeson each scored nine points to lead the Wolves. The Anderson defense limited freshman Haylee Lepaio, the SAC's second leading scorer to two points on the night.
The Trojans close out their two-game SAC homestand on Saturday by playing host to Catawba on "Play 4Kay Day" to help raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research. Tip-off for the women's-men's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
