ANDERSON, S.C. - With five players reaching double figures in the scoring column, the Anderson women's basketball team opened a two-game South Atlantic Conference homestand with a 73-64 win past Brevard Saturday afternoon on Annie Tribble Court at the Abney Athletic Center.

Anderson never trailed en route to snapping a three-game skid and improved to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference, while Brevard (5-13, 0-10 SAC) suffered its 10th consecutive setback.

The Trojans jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the opening six minutes, as the Trojans connected on four of their first five shots, with freshman guard Sierra Simpson leading the way with a pair of baskets.

But the Tornados, who opened cold by connecting on just three of their first 10 shots, responded with a 15-6 run to climb within 20-19 at the 8:09 mark of the opening half. The Trojans answered with an 18-4 run over the next five minutes to push out to their largest lead of the contest, at 38-23, with 3:38 left in the half, with junior guard Alissa Diaz igniting the outburst with a jumper and recording eight of her team-high 13 points during the run. Forward Breonda Shannon netted five points and junior Amanda Parris helped fuel the surge with a rare four-point play, with Anderson holding a 40-29 halftime advantage.

Brevard scored seven unanswered points to open the second half, trimming the Anderson lead to 40-36 with more than 15 minutes to play, but it was as close as the Tornados would get, as Simpson stopped the rally with a pair of free throws and AU pushed back out to a double-digit cushion, 52-40, with more than 12 minutes left.

Anderson shot a sizzling season-high 58 percent from the floor, eclipsing the previous mark of 57.4 percent set against the Tornados set in the first meeting in late November. The Trojans also held a 37-21 rebounding advantage.

Diaz led the Trojans with 13 points and equaled her career-high with six assists, while recording seven rebounds. Emily Willoughby added 11 points, with Simpson,Parris and Shannon each tossing in 10 points. Parris also dished out five assists and Shannon corralled a game-high eight rebounds.

Brevard sophomore Katelynne Poole led all scorers with 17 points, while Lyndsay Brendle netting 14 and Anna Schlobohm chipping in 13.

The Trojans play host to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday at the Abney Center, looking to salvage a split of the season series with the Bears after dropping a 65-59 decision to L-R back on Jan. 4. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
