ANDERSON, S.C. - Looking to keep its South Atlantic Conference winning streak intact, Anderson University men's soccer returns to the Electric City when it welcomes Catawba for a South Atlantic Conference contest. Kick-off from Trojan Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Trojans
Following a disappointing 2-1 road setback to Brevard on Sept. 23,
AU has captured victories in its last four conference matchups, as
the last three wins have come by 3-2 scorelines. Despite the
conference winning streak, the Trojans suffered a 2-1 setback to
archrival Erskine on Tuesday to drop their overall record to 6-5-1
for the year, but remained in second place in the conference
standings with a 5-2 league mark. In addition to the records, AU is
unbeaten inside Trojan Stadium this season, holding a 2-0-1 mark at
home.
Junior midfielder Brad Du Plooy has scored a goal in each of the team's last two matches, which slots him tied for third in the goals categories with two this season. Teammates Andre Carle and Lars Kaula continue to pace the Trojans with four goals apiece, as all four of Kaula's goals have come from the penalty spot.
Defensively, Devon Ashy has been the only goalkeeper the Trojans have sent out, as he continues to lead the SAC in saves with 56 for the year. Ashy ranks second in minutes with just over 1,120 and third in clean sheets with three.
The Catawba Indians
Catawba continues to search for its first victory for the month of
October, as it enters Saturday's contest with a 4-7 overall mark
and a 2-5 record for the SAC. With the two conference wins, the
Indians are alone in 10th place in the league standings, as they
look to play themselves into the top-eight for a berth into the SAC
Championships in November.
Senior Kenny Bonilla leads the offense for the Indians with five goals and an assist on the season. Sophomore defender Philipp Hollenhorst follows with three goals, as the tandem combines for eight of the team's 18 goals on the season. As a team, the Indians rank second in the SAC in shot percentage with a .142 mark, but ninth in shots on goal with 57.
In goal, junior Christian Watts has earned 10 starts and has racked up over 941 minutes between the posts. Watts has totaled 33 saves for the year and claimed three shutouts.
The Series
Since entering the SAC before the 2010 season, Anderson has not
dropped a match to Catawba, entering Saturday's contest with a
4-0-1 record in the five-year span. The Trojans have posted
victories in the last two matchups, including a 2-0 win in
Salisbury a season ago.
