NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team opened a three-game South Atlantic Conference series with a 12-3 setback to Newberry, Friday night at the Smith Road Complex.

Anderson slipped to 18-25 overall and 8-11 in the conference, while Newberry improved to 28-15-1 overall and 10-9 in the SAC with its third straight win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freshman Carson Barrett had one of the Trojans' five hits on the night, while driving in two runs with a first-inning single. Senior Steven Cooper was on base three times with walks, while senior Kyle Bailey added a single and a walk.

Nick Contafio (3-3) absorbed the loss after surrendering five runs on three hits, while walking three batters in 1/3 of an inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans opened the scoring with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning, but were limited to a pair of hits and six walks over the remaining eight innings.

Newberry answered by sending 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, as the Wolves posted five runs. Newberry added solo runs in the third and fourth innings and scored four more in the fifth frame to build an 11-3 advantage. Newberry rounded out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the bottom of the eighth inning.

NOTABLES
• Cooper has reached base safely in 30 of his last 32 games, while drawing a walk 21 times in his last 12 games.
• Barrett has gotten on base in 15 of his last 16 games, while recording four multi-hit games in his last eight games.
• Senior LJ Newman has recorded 19 hits in his last 11 games.
• Graduate student Garrett Bernardo has driven in six runs in the last five games, while reaching safely in 15 of 17 games.
• Bailey extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Anderson and Newberry will wrap up the series Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex.
