ANDERSON, S.C. - Carson-Newman rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, as the Eagles outlasted Anderson, 7-6, to open a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series, Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
Anderson dropped to 16-23 overall and 7-9 in the league with its second loss in three outings, while Carson-Newman improved to 23-15 overall and 9-7 in the league with its' fourth win in five outings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior Steven Cooper was 2-for-5 at the plate with a single and a
double and a pair of RBI and a run scored, with fellow senior LJ
Newman going 2-for-4 and scoring twice, while belting his 11th home
run of the season. Freshman Carson Barrett added a pair of singles
and crossed the plate once, while Garrett Bernardo recorded a pair
of RBI and sophomore Tyler Miller scored a pair of runs.
Senior Brock Goodling (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out one in an inning of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles jumped on top early, with two runs in the top of the
first inning.
Anderson cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first, when Miller was hit by a pitch and scored on Cooper's one-out double to left-center.
Carson-Newman extended its lead to 4-1 with solo runs in the fifth and sixth frames, while AU countered by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Newman led off the frame by clubbing his homer over the wall in left field, with Barrett following with his second straight single. With bases loaded and no outs, Stephen McKnight lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, which plated Barrett with Anderson's second run of the inning.
The Trojans added three unanswered runs in the seventh and
eighth innings to claim a 6-4 lead, but Carson-Newman posted three
runs with no outs in the top of the ninth to regain the lead and
the Trojans were unable to rally.
