Trojans Take Two at Mid-South Classic

DUNCAN, S.C. - The Anderson softball team claimed two wins at the Mid-South Classic, defeating Mansfield (Pa.) 9-5 in the first game and topping Ohio Dominican, 3-2, in the nightcap, Friday afternoon at Tyger River Park

Anderson improved to 17-3 with the pair of wins, while Mansfield slipped to 1-2 and Ohio Dominican fell to 2-8 on the season.

Anderson 9, Mansfield 5

Junior Danielle Swygert was 2-for-4, with a home run and six RBI in the opener. Sophomore Jessica Neidigh was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Junior pitcher Bailey Smith was 2-for-3 and scored a run while driving in a run. Junior Lauren Bell recorded two hits in three at-bats and scored once. Junior shortstop Abby Child was 1-for-2 and scored twice.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Smith's one-out home run - her third of the season. The Mountaineers evened the score with a run in the top of the third inning but AU answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Swygert notched two RBI with a double to centerfield.

Mansfield scored a solo run in the top of the fourth with Anderson countering with a run in the bottom of the inning and the Mountaineers added another run in the fifth, but the Trojans responded with four runs on Swygert's grand slam.

Mansfield plated two runs in the top of the seventh but could get no closer.

Smith (7-2) earned the complete-game win, while surrendering the five runs - all earned. She struck out 13 and walked three.

Anderson 3, Ohio Dominican 2

Abby Child was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while Molly Child was 1-for-1 and reached base three times. She also recorded her third home run of the season in the third. Neidigh was 1-for-3 with a fifth-inning home run.

The Trojans took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Molly Child was hit by a pitch and scored when Swygert bounced out to second. AU added another run in the third inning on Molly Child's solo home run.

Neidigh blasted her third home run of the season with two outs in the fifth and it proved to be the game winning hit, as the Panthers scored twice in the top of the seventh inning on a one-out, two-run homer. But Ohio Dominican would get no closer, as Bell recorded the final two outs.

Bell earned her 10th win of the season by scattering five hits and striking out six while walking one.

Anderson continues its eight-game road swing at South Carolina State on Thursday. First-pitch versus the Bulldogs in Orangeburg is slated for 1 p.m.
