Trojans Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader to Bulldogs

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson baseball team dropped both ends of a South Atlantic Conference twin bill to Wingate, 9-0 and 22-7, Monday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 12-20 overall on the season and 10-16 in league play, while Wingate improved to 25-11 and 20-10.

Game #1
Wingate 9, Anderson 0
The Trojan offense managed just five hits in the opener – all singles – with just one runner (Jacob Fox) reaching scoring position.

Junior Jacob Kohns had one of the singles and also reached on a walk, with sophomore Ryan Brash adding a fifth-inning single. Senior Nick Vella was 1-for-2 with a single and posted a walk in the second inning. Designated hitter Davis Goodyear and Fox also notched singles.

Sophomore left-hander Joseph Cottone (1-5) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. He struck out seven of the 29 batters he faced and walked just three.

Game #2
Wingate 22, Anderson 7 (7 Innings)
Kohns was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, with a pair of singles and also scored a run. Senior Trevor Weisner added two singles, drove in two runs and crossed the plate once, while catcher Tyler Berry was 2-for-4, with a double and an RBI-single. Second baseman Will Lindsey also had an RBI-single and reached after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Bryan Mitchell also posted an RBI-single and drew a fifth-inning walk. Senior Chandler Castleberry drove in a run with a single and reached base on a first-inning walk.

Senior Brent Reynolds (0-2) – the first of six Trojan pitchers - took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in the first inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Wingate notched three runs in the top of the first inning, while adding solo runs in the third and fifth frames to take a 5-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added three more runs in the sixth and wrapped up the scoring with a ninth-inning run.

Game 2
The Bulldogs scored six runs in the first inning, while adding five more in the second inning and scored at least one run in each inning but the sixth. They built a 14-0 cushion before the Trojans countered with six runs in the fourth inning after sending 10 batters to the plate. Vella led off with a double down the left-field line, while Mitchell, Berry and Kohns followed with three consecutive singles to help fuel the outburst. Shaw was hit by a pitch, with Weisner and Castleberry adding run-scoring singles.

Wingate posted two more runs in the fifth and after AU tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs finished out the scoring with a six-run seventh inning.

NOTABLES
• The loss in the opener marked just the third time this season that the Trojans have been shut out.
Dalton Shaw extended his hitting streak to six straight games.
Tyler Berry, Tanner Bray and Justin Fox are all riding five-game hitting streaks.
Nick Vella, Shaw and Berry have each reached base safely in nine consecutive games.

UP NEXT
The Trojans will wrap up their regular-season conference slate with a four-game set at Catawba, Friday and Saturday, then conclude the regular season with a nonconference visit to Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 20.
