THOMASVILLE, S.C. -- The CVAC women's golf coaches have ranked Anderson College No. 1 in 2004 preseason poll, the league office announced Friday. The first CVAC women's golf championship will be played Apr. 18-20 at Foxfire in Pinehurst, N.C. Last fall, the Lady Trojans shot a team low of 318 and there were some career rounds, but first-year head coach Danny Neal wants to see more consistency. "Our women had a good fall but it wasn't as good as it could've been," Neal said. "I want more competition for the starting five spots." Kathryn Adkins (Sr., Easley, S.C.) is a solid No. 1 for the Lady Trojans. "Kathryn has set herself apart as our No. 1 player," Neal said. Adkins has a career stroke average of 79.50. Her lowest round of the fall was 76 in the second round of the Catawba tournament. The remainder of AC's starting five last fall was juniors Brandi Jackson (Greenville, S.C.), Janie Wichert (N. Canton, Ohio), and Darcie Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.), and freshman Carlie Eastman (Warren, Ohio). Pfeiffer University was picked second in the poll. This will be the first year of women's golf at Pfeiffer University. The team is coached by Jim Haughey and has seven players -- Leslie Ledbetter - New Market, AL, Cassie Greif - Payette, ID, Nicole Brummel - Garnett, KS. Pfeiffer had an impressive fall with their best showing at the Flagler Fall Slam -- seventh in a 13-team field. Limestone College and Queens University of Charlotte tied for third in the poll. The Lady Saints are showing a lot of promise this spring. After finishing with a 19-48 record last season, the Saints return four starters and welcome two recruits. Sophomores Maggie Caron, Destiny Kirby, Caroline Rankin, and Dana Russell all are returning. Queens University of Charlotte is coming off its most productive season in the brief three-year history of the program. The Royals return three strong performers in Sarah McCarthy (Sr., Richmond, Va.), Martha Morgan (So., Cunningham, Tenn.) and Christa Soderstrom (So., Worcester, Mass.). Queens also added Courtney Noble (St. Helena Island, S.C.) and Catelyn Eddy (Manchester, Conn). Rounding out the women's golf preseason poll in fifth and sixth place are Mt. Olive College and St. Andrews Presbyterian College respectively. CVAC Women's Golf Preseason Poll 1. Anderson (4) 23 2. Pfeiffer 18 T-3. Limestone(1) 17 T-3. Queens (N.C.)(1) 17 5. Mt. Olive 9 6.
