Track and Field Posts Strong Marks at Powersox Invitational

HICKORY, N.C. - The Anderson track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the 2011 PowerSox Invitational hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday afternoon at the Moretz Sports Complex/Irwin Bell Track.

The Trojan teams combined to claim four top spots and 16 top-five finishes on the day.

Senior Katelyn Rodgers won the high jump at a height of 1.53 meters and claimed eighth in the javelin throw with a distance of 24.03 meters, while sophomore Krishaun Hall won the 200 meter dash in 26.91 seconds and took second in the 100 meter dash at 13.12.

Junior Lauren Sloan won the shot put with a distance of 12.32 meters and placed seventh in the discus throw at 28.48 meters, with junior Whitney Bishoff taking the top spot in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:21.00. Sophomore Emily Eckroth won the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:37.02.

Freshman Elizabeth Fastzkie tied for second in the high jump at height of 1.48 meters and sophomore Amanda Johnson took the sixth spot in the 1500 meter run. Sophomore Joelle Purinton finished seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.45 seconds. Re'Jenia Evans placed third in the 100 meter dash at 13.54 seconds and Sarah Solesbee was second in the 200 meter dash at 28.53 and was seventh in 100 meter dash at 13.74 seconds.

Lydia Davis placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.27, while Kathryn Purinton crossed the line fourth at 2:33.90 seconds and freshman Rachel Westberry was eighth at 2:37.24 seconds. Freshman Hannah Robles crossed the line in third in the 5000 meter run at 20:11.35 seconds.

The AU 4x100 meter women's relay squad was second with time of 50.97, while the men's 4x100 relay posted a fifth place finish with a time of 43.88.

On the men's side, sophomore Will Byars claimed second in the hammer throw with a distance of 40.19 meters and second in the shot put at 12.68 meters. He also placed fifth in the discus throw at 33.59 meters. Freshman Brant Bullister was seventh in hammer throw at 29.57 meters, seventh in the discus at 32.56 and eighth in the shot put with a toss of 10.58 meters.


Senior Derrike Black was 10th in the shot put at 10.27 meters, 11th in the hammer throw at 26.54 meters and 12th in the discus toss at 24.91 meters.

Sophomore Zach Hart placed second in the javelin throw at 45.67 meters. Freshman Deniz Hay finished second in the 1500 meter run at 4:09.29, while sophomore Nigel Reynolds placed fourth in 4:15.38 and freshman Will Belue was 12th at 4:24.21.

Sophomore Josh Butler claimed third in the 100 meter dash at 11.28 seconds, while freshman Terrance Jefferson took fourth in the 200 meter dash at 25.76 seconds and seventh in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.63. Sophom ore Matt Shaffer was second in the 800 meter at 1:56.48 and junior Drew Mahaffey finished ninth in the 800 meter at 2:04.87

In the men's 5000 meter run sophomore Alex Pena claimed second with a time of 15:53.14, while freshman Kyle Koby earned seventh in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:23.81 and Parks Edwards took eighth in a time of 16:24.64, with Matthew Imes crossing the line in 10th with a time of 17:21.67.

The Trojans are back in action at Coastal Carolina next week.
