HARROGATE, Tenn. - It came down to the last singles flight, but the Lincoln Memorial University men's tennis team edged Anderson, 5-4, in South Atlantic Conference play Monday evening at the LMU Tennis Courts.
LMU improved to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in the SAC in a marathon match that lasted over four and a half hours and saw the recently-installed court lights used for the first time.
LMU won the three doubles flights to give LMU a 3-0 lead going into the singles' action.
Anderson's Stan Atema and Daniel Gonzalez dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 1 to Philipp Hoffmann and Tom Goossens, while Deni Mehagic and Loic Ambrose suffered a narrow 9-8 (7-1) setback to Alexey Minevskiy and Marcelo Alvim at number two doubles in the tie-breaker At number three doubles, LMU's Stefan Hall and Michael Koenen edged Trey Halbauer and Ilya Zakharov, 8-6.
In singles, Mehagic claimed a straight set 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2, while Zakharov posted a 6-0, 6-4, win at No. 3.
Gonzalez earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 and Loic Ambrose notched a 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 6.
Hoffmann won the number one flight 7-5, 6-2. Anderson won at numbers two, three, four and six to tie the score at 4-4. Tom Goossens broke the tie with his 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) win to give LMU the victory.
