ANDERSON, S.C. - Playing its second match in as many days, the Anderson men's tennis team blanked Catawba, 9-0, in South Atlantic Conference action Thursday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
Anderson (2-2, 2-0 SAC) made its' home-opener a success as the Trojans handed Catawba is first loss in three outings during the Spring schedule. The Indians fell to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in league action.
The Anderson duo of Stan Atema and Daniel Gonzalez defeated Catawba's Pierce Hoover and Thomas Mitchell, 8-3, at No. 1 to get the Trojans rolling, while Deni Mehagic and Krystof Gulbinovic knocked off the Indians' Tom McCormack and Uri Yarkoni, 8-2, at the No. 2 slot. Ilya Zakharov and Trey Halbauer got past Catawba's Matthew Nicholson and Alex Macdonald in a hard-fought 9-8 decision at No. 3 as AU swept the Indians.
Atema took down Jess Goodall, in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, and Mehagic rallied past Macdonald, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Anderson's Daniel Gonzalez held off Mitchell, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3 and Zakharov claimed a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 win past Hoover.
Halbauer held off McCormack, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5 and Loic Ambrose claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 to complete the sweep.
Anderson opens a two-match road swing Friday at USC Aiken, with first serve slated for 2 p.m. versus the Pacers.
