NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Anderson men's tennis team claimed two doubles wins and five-of-six singles' matches to overwhelm Newberry, 7-2, in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Wolves' Cannon Courts.

Anderson improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in league play while Newberry dropped to 0-3 and 0-1.

The Anderson tandem of Stan Atema and Daniel Gonzalez defeated Vinicius Botelho and David Sons, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Deni Mehagic and Trey Halbauer teamed up to knock off Newberry's Jeffery Kiser and James Bethea, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.

Atema held off NC's Michael Saunders 7-6, 6-3 for a win at No. 1 singles and Mehagic topped Mohammed Chakir 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Gonzalez earned a 6-2, 6-1 win past Sons at No. 4, while Trey Halbauer downed Kiser 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 slot. Anderson's Loic Ambrose closed out the action with a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 win past Michael Woolard at No. 6.

The Trojans are slated to get back on the courts quickly by visiting perennial powerhouse Armstrong Atlantic on Sunday afternoon.
