SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- No. 12 Lander swept the doubles then closed out Anderson quickly in the singles to beat the No. 17 Trojans 5-0 in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Regional of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships at USC Spartanburg Saturday. Lander's Carl Hesser and Tom van Ooij defeated Anderson's James Fitzgerald and Phillips Webb, 8-1, to give the Senators a quick 1-0 lead. Tobias Edstrom and Emil Olsson, after holding a 6-5 lead, ran off two straight games to take an 8-5 victory over Anderson's Karan Doctor and Olof Hallstrom at No. 1 doubles. The Senators made it a sweep when Fredrik Hoglund and Gena Urbanovich claimed an 8-5 victory over Gabor Boczonadi and Siddharth Sudhakar at No. 2. Lander was up 5-4 and won three of the next four games to take the win in the match. In singles play, Hesser defeated Anderson's Doctor in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2 singles and Edstrom defeated Sudhakar in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) to end the match at 5-0. The other matches were not completed since Lander had earned the five points needed for the win. The Senators were leading in three of the other four matches and were tied at the No. 6 spot.
