CLEMMONS, N.C. -- The Anderson women's golf team is tied for fourth place, while the Trojan men's team sits in eighth following Sunday's opening round action at the 2010 Conference Carolinas Golf Championships, hosted by Belmont Abbey at Tanglewood Park (Championship Course) in Clemmons, North Carolina. The women, playing on a par 5,805-yard, par 72 course, are paced by the Belmont Abbey women, who fired a opening round 309 to lead by 26 shots, while the Abbey men and the Barton Buldogs both posted scores of 293 on a 6,826-yard, par 70 course. Today's round was played in unseasonably cool temperatures with wind gusts at 20 miles per hour. In the women's tournament, four of the Abbey's five players posted the six lowest scores of the day, led by freshman Melissa Siviter, who opened with a 76. She shares the individual lead with Valentina Urquiola of Mount Olive. Belmont Abbey's Meagan Wallace is tied for third with a 77, while teammates Liz Cortez and Carley Warrington posted scores of 78 to sit in a tie for fifth. The Abbey holds a 26 shot lead over Queens (335) while Pfeiffer, the defending champion, is one shot back of the Royals. Erskine and Anderson share the fourth position with scores of 346. Mount Olive is sixth at 352, while Limestone (373) and Saint Andrews Presbyterian (408) are seventh and eighth, respectively. For the men, it looked as if Barton would take the opening day lead, but the Abbey's Adam Hedges, playing in the final group, posted a two-under 68, the only score under par, to pull the Crusaders even. Hedges leads the individual lead by three shots over Barton's Daniel Castleberry, who led four Bulldogs with scores in the 70s with a one over 71. Both Barton and Belmont Abbey have four players in the top 16 and three in the top ten. Belmont Abbey's Joe Campbell fired a 73 to sit in a tie for sixth with Barton's Thomas Muto, Jr, while Peter Tarver Jones shares the eighth spot with Todi Gissurarson of Saint Andrews Presbyterian. The Knights opened with a strong 301 to sit alone in third, three clear of fourth place Coker. Limestone and Pfeiffer share the fifth spot with scores of 307, while Queens (308), Anderson (318), Erskine (319), Mount Olive (324) and Lees-McRae (330) round out the field. Hayley Parks (85) and Kalyn Johnson (85) paced the Trojan women and are tied for 16th, while Sophie Dembroski grabbed a share of 21st with an opening round 88, with Laura Buyers also carding a first-round 88. Lindsay Parks (89) rounded out the scoring for AU and is in a tie for 26th.
