McClure and Coney Named Assistant Men’s Basketball Coaches

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson University men's basketball has announced that RJ McClure and Jerome Coney have been named Assistant Coaches for the Trojans.

McClure, a former standout guard at Lenoir-Rhyne, led the Bears in scoring (17.7 ppg) and 3-point field goals (77) during the 2013-14 campaign, while earning All-South Atlantic Conference Second-Team accolades following the season. The native of Canton, N.C., also set the single-game league record for points (52) and the single-game school record for three-pointers made (12) in January, 2014 in the Bears' contest at Newberry.

In his final home contest for L-R, McClure finished with a game-high 25 points and became the 51st player in school history to score at least 1,000 career points.

McClure earned South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honors on three occasions, helping lead the Bears to an overall 16-10 record and a 15-7 mark in league play, as L-R captured the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. The 5-foot-11 left-hander became familiar with the Abney Athletic Center hardwood during his senior season, scoring 22 points in 26 minutes of action on the strength of six treys versus AU. Off the court, McClure was a member of the Dean's List at L-R.

McClure will continue to serve as the team's strength and conditioning coach, as well as coordinate recruiting and will be responsible for skill development of the guards.

"I am excited that I get to continue to do what I love," said McClure. "Winning is something that happens here, so I know with this title brings big responsibilities. I am excited about the challenges ahead and can't wait for our student-athletes to arrive on campus so we can start the season ahead."

Coney has been a fixture with the program since arriving as a freshman after graduating from T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson in 2009. He lettered in football for the storied Yellow Jacket program after playing basketball in his native New Jersey for the North Plainfield Canucks. Coney was an honor student in both English and History in high school and majored in Business at AU, graduating Cum Laude in 2014.

Born in North Plainfield, New Jersey, Coney considers Anderson, S.C., home.

Coney, who previously served as a student assistant and as the team's video coordinator, will be responsible for overseeing academics, online recruiting, skill development of the post players and all aspects of the junior varsity program.

"I'm thankful for this opportunity," said Coney. "I am excited for the season to begin. It's truly surreal journeying from a camper to a JV player to a manager and video coordinator to a graduate assistant to this position. I am ready to assist in whatever way I can."
