JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - A balanced scoring attack lifted the Anderson men's basketball team to a 69-62 South Atlantic Conference win past Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

Anderson (18-10, 12-6 SAC) clinched the second seed in next week's league tournament by winning its' second consecutive contest and avenged an earlier four-point setback at the hands of the Eagles.

Carson-Newman (11-15, 8-10 SAC) suffered its third straight setback and will enter the conference tourney as the eighth seed.

The opening 10 minutes of the game featured three ties and five lead changes, as neither team was able to build more than a five-point advantage.

With the score knotted at 17-17 midway through the first half, the Trojans scored 11 unanswered points over the next three-plus minutes to gain a 28-17 edge with 6:57 left in the first half.

Junior guard Nick Trull sparked the surge with as layup, while junior center Taylor Shugart scored six of his eight first-half points during the run. Senior sharpshooter Oskars Ernsteins capped the outburst with a 3-pointer.

The teams went to the locker rooms with AU holding a 32-25 lead.

Carson-Newman chipped away at the AU advantage over the first three minutes of the second stanza, tying the game at 37 apiece before the Trojans pushed back out to a 48-43 lead when senior Trey Britton hit one-of-two from the line with 10:36 left in the game.

Anderson led by as many as 11 points inside the final four minutes.

Trull finished with a team-high 15 points on the strength of 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc, while Shugart and Kevis Cornwell each tallied 14 points on the afternoon. Shugart narrowly missed his fourth double-double of the campaign, recording eight rebounds. Britton and Ernsteins tallied 10 points apiece, with Tyrell McDowell pulling down a season-high 10 boards.

With his fourth 3-pointer of the night - at the 4:32 mark of the second half - Trull notched his 1,000th career point, becoming just the sixth player in school history to reach the plateau. His free throw with 18 seconds left moved him into fifth-place all-time on the school's scoring list.

As the No. 2 seed, Anderson will play host to seventh-seeded Catawba on Wednesday at the Abney Athletic Center. The Trojans slit during the regular season versus the Indians, winning 81-56 at home and falling on the road, 75-69. Tip-off versus the Indians is scheduled for 7 p.m.
