DEARBORN, Mich. – Anderson University sophomore Emma Charles carded an opening round 8-over-par 80 and is tied for 39th place following opening- round action Tuesday at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships, which are being hosted on a par-72, 5,848-yard TPC Michigan layout.
South Atlantic Conference-member and nationally third-ranked Limestone leads the chase for team honors by one stroke over Findlay, with both teams seeking their first national championship. Second-ranked Lynn, which is looking for its third national championship, is one shot further back in third place. Top-ranked Dallas Baptist is fourth, while St. Mary's (Texas) is in fifth place heading into Wednesday's second round. Fifth-ranked Indianapolis is in sixth place and is seeking its second national title three years and its third championship in six years.
South Region Champion Tampa holds the seventh spot, with Grand Valley State in eighth place. Arkansas Tech is ninth, with Northeastern State, Texas A&M – Commerce and Rogers State rounding out the 12-team field. Florida Tech, the defending national champion, is not in the field this year.
Lynn's Camila Madariaga, who finished alongside Charles in a tie for fifth place in last week's South Region Championship, leads the battle for individual honors by one stroke over Dallas Baptist's Faith DeLaGarza, UIndy's Pilar Echeverria and teammate Helen Kreuzer. A trio of players, including South Region Champion Kiira Riihijarvi, are just two shots off the pace.
Wednesday's second round is slated to get underway at 10:30 a.m., with Charles slated to tee off at 12:36 p.m.
