Knox Named First Team Academic All-American

TOWSON, Md. -- Former Anderson standout shortstop Meredith Knox has been named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball First-Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and announced Wednesday.

Knox, a senior from Washington, N.C., is one of one of 11 players selected to the national team and was also named an NFCA Scholar Athlete earlier this year along with earning academic all-conference honors. She became eligible after being named to the first-team all-district squad earlier this month.

The only North Carolina native and the lone representative of any school in South Carolina in either the University or College divisions, Knox carried a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in theology and religion. The 5-foot-9 shortstop garnered first-team all-conference recognition and was named to the Conference Carolinas' all-tournament team following a season that saw her rank in the top 10 in the conference in six offensive categories, including doubles, batting avg., home runs, hits, slugging pct. and on-base percentage. She posted hitting streaks of 11-games, five-games and four-games during the season.

In order to earn recognition, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution and are voted upon by CoSIDA members. They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at their respective institution. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
