Trojans Sweep Lady Warriors

ANDERSON, S.C. -- An explosive offense lifted the Anderson softball team past Southern Wesleyan as the Trojans closed out their regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at Smethers Field Wednesday night. Anderson (24-16 overall, 12-6 Conference Carolinas) swept the Warriors 8-1 in both match-ups as they geared up for the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament. In the first game Alex Waldrop (4-4) dazzled as she went all seven innings for the Trojans, giving up one run off just three hits. The lone run scored by the Warriors came in the fourth inning when a walk brought in a run after the bases were loaded. The Trojans went into the bottom of the sixth inning looking at a 1-0 deficit. Meredith Knox started off the inning with a triple and was followed by an Emily Monteith RBI double that tied the game at 1-1. The junior's 44th RBI on the season brought Kasey King up to the plate and with no outs King smashed a deep ball that landed over the left field fence to put the Trojans up 3-1. The scoring didn't stop there as two singles from Amber Duncan and Lyndsey Huitt, followed by a Lora Daniel walk, later saw Amber Sutherland up to bat with the bases loaded. The senior then hit an infield single that brought two more runs across the plate to put Anderson up 5-1. The scoring surge ended as Elisa Sebastyan hit a towering homer over the left field wall to tally three more runs for the Trojans. Amber Sutherland, Elisa Sebastyan and Kasey King each brought home two runs for the Trojans. The Trojans struck first in the second game, as a Kelly McInnes' single got things started. Next up to bat was Brook Lucas who reached on an infield error by the Warriors. One batter later Amber Sutherland hit a single that led to Amber Duncan hitting a base-clearing double to put the Trojans up 3-0. With a 3-1 lead in the fourth Anderson struck again. The first run of the inning was added when Cameron White flew out to left field, bringing home Hannah Owens who tagged up at third base. Two singles and an error scored another run for the Trojans. With two outs and two on, Emily Monteith doubled to bring home Brooke Lucas and Kelly McInnes to put the Trojans up 7-1. From there the Trojans cruised to the 8-1 victory. Kayla Hipp (1-1) picked up her first win of the season as she went 4 2/3 innings, surrendering one run off of four hits. She was followed by Donya Cobb who gave up no runs on one hit in 2 1/3 innings of work. The Trojans will take the field again on Friday in the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament as they take on Mount Olive at 10 a.m. in Hartsville, S.C.
