Anderson Splits Pair with Mount Olive

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson softball team (16-12, 6-2) faced conference-foe Mt. Olive (17-25, 6-7) on Friday, coming out with a 7-6 win and a 8-0 loss to split the doubleheader. The Trojans were quick to generate several runs on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one. The surge was ignited by a Meredith Knox double that scored Amber Sutherland; the RBI was the 20th of the season for the senior. The run support was far from being over and the Trojans took a 6-0 lead after Amber Duncan smashed a grand slam over the left field wall. The Trojans offense was tamed after Lauren Darden entered the game to pitch for Mt. Olive in relief of Sarah Saunders. The freshman went all six innings for the visiting Trojans and only gave up one run on four hits. For the homestanding Trojans, Katie Van Gieson pitched a stellar ball game, although the scoreboard may not have indicated it. The senior went all seven innings for the Trojans and only gave up three earned runs on seven hits, earning her fourth win on the season. Van Gieson found herself in the midst of jams but did an outstanding job to pitch out of them on her way to grabbing the conference win. Meredith Knox went two for three in the first match-up and Amber Duncan went one for two as she hit her sixth home run for the Trojans this season. In the second game the Trojans offense couldn't find a groove as they struggled to find five hits and were unable to put any runs on the scoreboard. Mt. Olive pitcher Kristen Ware displayed a near- flawless performance as she completed the game, striking out seven. Defensively the Trojans' pitching staff found themselves in jams that they couldn't escape from. Pitcher Casey Deer, who had six complete games on the season, had trouble finding a rhythm. The junior went just under four innings for Anderson, giving up eight hits and five runs, dropping to 6-5 on the season. Amber Sutherland and Lora Daniel both went one for two during the second game. Anderson gets back in action quickly as the Trojans welcome the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons to Smethers Field for a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score Season Statistics
